Our September selection is Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler, a groundbreaking and hauntingly prescient novel about survival, community, and hope in a world transformed by climate change and social upheaval.

Set in California in the early 2020s, fifteen-year-old Lauren Olamina lives behind the walls of a gated community with her family, sheltered from the chaos and violence beyond its borders. Lauren has hyperempathy, a condition that causes her to physically experience the pain and emotions of others. When her community is destroyed, Lauren is forced to venture into an increasingly dangerous world and begin building a new vision for humanity—one that will ultimately become the foundation for a new faith.

First published in 1993, Parable of the Sower remains a remarkably relevant and thought-provoking work of science fiction. We'll gather to discuss Butler's vision of the future, the themes of resilience and change, and the questions the novel raises about what it means to build a better world.
